Inspired by nature, the familiar beauty in the ordinary surroundings we normally take
for granted. That is how I describe my painting. These places, often local landscapes,
provoke emotion and stories from people about why they treasure these places and why
they love each piece. Painting is a challenge of studying composition, color and light and
how to portray them. I started in 2020 with the pandemic and an empty nest.
Initially, I used acrylics because I often remind myself, “You can always paint over it”
and I often do several times before I’m satisfied with the results. It gives me the
freedom to try something new. I have slowly experimented with watercolors, finding
them challenging in their own way, yet gratifying when I get those “happy accidents”
that watercolors can bring.
A designer by trade for over 30 years, I love to see the results of my work. This is what
brings me back to painting. A favorite trail, a friend’s suggestion, or just an image that
catches my eye will prompt the next piece. Friends often ask “How long does it take to
finish a painting?” That is a hard question as it can be a few hours but more likely a
few months from the beginning concept to a complete piece. I never know what I may
try next. That is the beauty of being an artist.
I am a member of Iowa Artists. I have done several commissioned works. Many of my
prints, cards etc can be seen at The Perfect Edge. We set up the gallery in our home
last summer and this will be my first year in the Northeast Iowa Studio Tour. I have
open gallery hours by appointment and various times throughout the year.

I have always found Christmas to be a time of wonder. During the Christmas holiday of 1994, it was even more so. That’s when the true enchantment of the season first entered my life as I began the journey in my art.

I remember settling in to make my normal handcrafted Christmas gifts for friends and family. My desire was to capture a little holiday enchantment by making Santas as gifts. Finding a pattern for a primitive Santa made from a paint stick, I added a hood, a bag and put together my first prototype. He was cute, but definitely needed improvement!

The problem was that Santa only had two dots for eyes and a wool beard at the tip of a paint stick. Not my vision!

Inspiration struck! I saw new, flesh-toned clay being used by another Christmas artist for her Santa faces. That was it!

Serendipity led me to the nearest craft store, where I found one box of the new clay. What luck! I purchased the clay and hurried home to my workshop. Working through the night, I crafted my first sculpted Santa face. When I glued the face to the paint stick, Santa came alive! People saw my Old World Santas and within a week I had 150 orders! So began Creations by Elea.

More than two decades later, my labor of love for Christmas, and seeing the joy it brings to others, still rewards me. I have also added Norwegian-inspired Nisses to my line of traditional Scandinavian Santas and the new Norwegian- Decorah Vikings.

I’ve also branched out into making beautiful felted textiles into clothing, mittens and scarves, as well as hand-hammered aluminum jewelry.

I invite you to discover my unique items and the care I put into all my handcrafted creations. The spirit of Christmas and old-world artisanship lives year-round at Creations by Elea!

Creating contemporary award winning designs in silver and gold since 1979. Darla and Glen live northeast of Decorah on a wooded acreage. The Ellickson Jewelry Studio and Gallery markets their hand-fabricated, original sterling silver and 14 karat gold jewelry, with many styles featuring unique gemstones. The gallery also features blown and fused glass, pottery and much more, from other Artists and is open on an appointment, call-first basis. They traveled annually exhibiting at 12 to 16 Fine Art Fairs throughout the United States.

Darla and Glen started the Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour and continue to organize it today. Darla is the Director. She designs the jewelry, does the torchwork, stone-setting, one-of-a-kind pieces and hand-polishing. Glen handles production pieces, chemically treats and tumble finishes their jewelry. Her Earloops© – a no holes required, comfortable earrings alternative – is drawing attention nationwide. A specialty of Darla’s is designing with customers and fabricating their own specially designed custom gold and silver jewelry (including wedding rings, necklaces, etc.). Darla has received more than 65 awards for her designs over the years. Her large neckpieces were featured in 2001 photos in both the American Artist/November and The Craft Connection magazines. Other awards include “Best in Shows” and “Awards of Excellence” at various venues.

Doug Cole received his art education at UNI and was a secondary art instructor for 33 years. In 2000 he retired and established Cole Art Pottery in Sumner, Iowa.

Cole specializes in one of a kind wheel-thrown electric fired, cone six functional and decorative pottery. Doug’s pottery philosophy centers on the durability and endless designing options that stoneware clay provides, along with the physical and tactile challenges of this medium. His “earthy” clay pieces emphasize rubbed iron-oxide surfaces with a variety of poured and dripped glaze patterns. Deep and shallow bowls, vases, bottlenecks and lidded forms make up the majority of Cole’s pottery productions.

A recent line of pottery involves the attachment of Devonian era marine fossils that are affixed to various pottery forms. These fossils are collected by the artist at the Rockford Iowa Fossil and Prairie Park.

Cole exhibits his pottery at a number of art festivals and galleries in the upper Midwest. He will be showing at Mary Ann Gloe’s gallery during the tour.
